🏔️ Destination guide

Vancouver & Whistler

Vancouver and Whistler is a two-speed trip: a seawall day in the city, then a mountain day that is a drive or a bus, not a side errand. The trips here keep those as separate days. Rain is a feature of the city and a reason the mountains have trees.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanWet and mild in the city. Ski season in Whistler. Pick one sport.
FebSame split. City museums and mountain snow. Not a beach month.
MarShoulder. Skiing fades, city rain stays. Cherry blossoms some years.
AprGreener and brighter. Mountains are between seasons. A city month.
MayWarmer. Seawall weather improves. Whistler trails start to open.
JunLong days. A good month for both halves if you do not need deep snow.
JulThe sunny month, relatively. Beaches and high trails. Book Whistler if you want a night there.
AugSame, and busy. Wildfire smoke is a some-years problem. Have a city backup.
SepWarm sea, fewer crowds, and trails still open. A favorite.
OctRain returns. Larch season higher up if you catch it. City-first again.
NovWet and dark. Ski areas wake up late in the month.
DecCity lights and mountain snow. A split trip needs a clear choice.

Where to stay

Downtown and the seawall

Stay here to walk to Stanley Park and the food halls. You will use the water as your map.

Granville Island, as a morning

A market morning, not a hotel base, unless you specifically want the quieter evenings across the water.

Whistler Village

A night or two when the mountain is the point. A day trip from Vancouver is long and it ends in the dark in winter.

Questions people ask

Is Whistler a day trip?

In summer, just. In winter, an overnight is kinder. The drive is two hours when the weather agrees and longer when it does not.

Do we need a car in the city?

No. Add one for Whistler or the North Shore lookouts if you are not taking the bus.

What is included in the daily budget?

Estimated totals from the public trips for this destination, per person per day. Lift tickets and a night in the village move the top of the range.
