Japan

Japan trips here are a city rail pass kind of plan: one base, day trips that return for dinner, and one overnight somewhere else if the week is long enough. Convenience-store breakfasts are a real line item. Temples in the morning, neighborhoods at night, and a deliberate empty hour because the days are easy to overfill.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanCold and clear in the cities. Fewer visitors. Excellent food month. Snow in the mountains.
FebStill cold. Plums, not cherries. Quiet temples.
MarBlossom forecasts run the month. Book rooms if the flowers are the reason. They move every year.
AprCherry season and peak crowds in the famous cities. Beautiful and planned-ahead.
MayWarm and green. A very good month after the blossom rush.
JunRainy season. Umbrellas are the local tool. Temples are moody and less crowded.
JulHot and humid. Festivals and busy trains. Start early.
AugPeak heat. Mountain day trips are kinder than another city afternoon.
SepTyphoons possible. Still warm. A workable shoulder if you stay flexible.
OctClear and gold. A first-choice month. Foliage starts in the north.
NovPeak foliage in many places, and peak bookings. The other first-choice month.
DecCold, illuminations, and year-end closures. Check which kitchens go dark.

Where to stay

Tokyo, one rail hub

Sleep near a station you will actually use, not near every sight. The city is a set of evenings in different neighborhoods.

Kyoto, walking distance to one district

Gion is for visiting at dusk. Sleeping a few stops away is quieter and usually cheaper. Temples are a morning.

A day trip that returns

Nara, a mountain town, or an extra city by train, home for dinner. An overnight only when the next morning starts there.

Questions people ask

Do we need a rail pass?

Only if the trips between cities are long enough to earn it. A week in Tokyo with one Kyoto overnight often does not. Do the arithmetic with the trains you will actually ride.

How full should a day be?

One area in the morning, one in the afternoon, dinner in a third if you still feel like moving. Four neighborhoods is a commute, not a day.

What do the budget figures use?
