🦥 Destination guide

Costa Rica

Costa Rica trips here are usually a two-base plan: cloud forest or volcano first, beach second, with a long drive in between that is the day, not a footnote. Wildlife shows up when you are out early. The afternoon rain is scheduled more reliably than the bus.

Best time to visit

When to go, written in our own words. Highlighted months are the ones we would book first.

MonthWhat we would expect
JanDry on the Pacific side. High season. Book the lodge before the flight.
FebThe same dry window. Mornings are clear for hanging bridges and volcano viewpoints.
MarStill dry and still busy. A very good month.
AprShoulder. The Pacific is still kind. Prices ease a little.
MayRain returns, especially afternoons. Green season prices are the reason to come.
JunWet and lush. Waterfalls are at their best. Pack a rain jacket, not a poncho you will throw away.
JulRainy and muddy on some trails. Lowest rates. Not the month for a tight photo schedule.
AugSimilar to July. Caribbean weather does its own thing; check that coast separately.
SepA small dry break some years. Do not count on it. Do count on lower rates.
OctRain tapering on the Pacific. A sneaky good month.
NovDry season starting. Trails firm up. Lodges fill for December.
DecPeak. Sunshine and holiday pricing. Reserve the popular parks.

Where to stay

La Fortuna

The volcano-and-hot-springs base. One or two nights is the pattern on these trips, with a hanging bridge or a waterfall in the morning.

Monteverde

Cloud forest, cooler nights, and a winding arrival. Worth it when the trip has a full day, not a drive-by.

Manuel Antonio or the Guanacaste coast

The beach half. Pick one coast. Combining both with La Fortuna in a week is how people spend the vacation in a van.

Questions people ask

Is a rental car assumed?

On the longer trips, yes. A driver for the Fortuna-to-coast day is the alternative, and it is often calmer than a first time on those roads.

How many bases?

Two is the shape that shows up. Three bases in a week means you are collecting lobbies.

What is the daily range?

Estimated spend per person per day from the public Costa Rica trips, activities included. Park tickets and a guide move it more than lunch does.
